Final Major Project

As night falls on any urban area artificial light takes over illuminating expanses in an attempt to recreate the even spread of daylight, however while some areas become well lit the light can become dispersed creating gradients of visibility. Tonal values also contrast from daylight with different colours and strengths furthermore changing the distribution. Light also becomes positioned for purpose to highlight, guide and create a feeling of safety. The area between these lights become ambient and fades into darkness a void between the visible and unknown. This feeling of unknowing naturally draws us to the light areas in order to give us position on surroundings.
In my project I plan to capture these differences in varied surroundings from city’s to suburbs. I will highlight the feeling of the journey and direction that lights creates as they illuminate the surroundings.

I felt like this blog needed finishing, the images above are my finals and the ones i presented in my part of the exhibition and in turn got me to University of Wales Newport: BA Documentary Photography.

Just a quick thanks to Catherine Frediani and all the class for your feedback and discussions. All the best for the future ill keep in touch!!

Wake up, headache , where the **** am i?!

An experimental set of images taking the idea of dropping in and out of conciseness, a subdued almost drugged feel comes across. I may extend this looking at movement and disorientation. I chose to display this as an animation in order to create a fast speed flicking through and to show the gradual lightening and darkening of frames. None of the images are individually striking, but i feel as a series they work perfectly.

The inspiration of these images from a film, i recently watched Gladiator, there is a scene where he keeps dropping in and out of conciseness. The fading and darkened muted colour made me think about weather this could be recreated with still images. I have never really worked in an abstract style before, but this project is all about experimentation so i will be stepping out of my comfort zone as much as possible.

Out of all the images used in this animation i feel this one has the most value on its own as an image, personally i get  feeling of being lost, looking for a exit or something to place myself.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH !!!

ANGER.RAGE.

Canals at night.

Some images i have selected when i went to the canals after it had snowed at night ( YES I WAS FROZEN)
I decided to pick this five out because i like how light creates a warming feel to the images i also really think the refelctions in the water compliment the hard lines of the walls and structures that surround the canals.

Passer By

I think the way the figure has become blurred in the second image due to using a longer exposure time due to shooting at night has really worked to my advantage on this photograph. It created movement and a sense of a rush of the person passing an open doorway that almost invites to go inside on the first image when no one is in the fame. Without stopping or going inside.

Under the Bridge

I think the lights in the image really add to the atmosphere created in the bridge by highlighting the texture on the roof in a warm yellow colour giving a secure feeling even though It looks a bit creepy . This contrasts with the outside that feels more open with mixing of lights and colour increasing the sense of looking out the image has.

Split by a Bridge

I think this image gets separated into three sections each having its own atmosphere:

Left of Bridge- gives us a entrance.

Bridge - Gives us texture and a sense of security of being under something.

Right of bridge - open space and winding paths create a sense of adventure.
